Used Book Superstore Opening in Burlington
BURLINGTON, MA - Burlington area residents will soon have a new spot to call their own. A new community book store, the Used Book Superstore will be opening at 256 Cambridge Street on August 15th. The store will offer residents a new alterative in the purchase of books, DVDs, CDs, and more. The Superstore will also offer locals something unique: a chance to help out with the store’s “Books for Troops” program, which allows shoppers and visitors to select books right off the shelves, package them up, and set them aside for the store to ship. This community night will take place every Thursday at the Superstore and those who wish to participate can also submit addresses of loved ones whom they have overseas so that they can receive a free package of books. In addition, all current and former military members will receive a 20% discount on their entire purchase every Thursday after showing any form of military identification. Local teachers will also be rewarded at the new Superstore. Every Wednesday teachers can receive 20% off their purchase after showing any form of proof that identifies them as a teacher, a program that was developed in an attempt to lessen the burden of financing books for classrooms that many teachers currently deal with. All other patrons need not worry; every book will be discounted to 90% off of its original price, with a $1 minimum. The Superstore will offer more than 100,000 books sorted into more than 50 categories which will be restocked daily, as well as a selection of videos. Books Get Another Shelf Life
NEW BEDFORD, MA - If you want to get rid of leftover books, there is another alternative to the trash can. The Greater New Bedford Refuse Management District is offering New Bedford and Dartmouth residents a free drop-off site for used books at the Shawmut Avenue Transfer Station, 1103 Shawmut Ave. CDs, DVDs, videos and audio books are also accepted. "We're trying in every way to make use of what comes out of a household," said Virginia Valiela, executive director for the Regional Refuse District. Ms. Valiela hopes that the initiative will reduce tonnage and save valuable space in the Crapo Hill Landfill. The city of New Bedford collected two tons of recycled paper last month alone, she said. The books donated to the transfer station are resold and redistributed by Got Books Inc., a for-profit used book seller and fundraiser based in Lawrence. Got Books sells at least 80 percent of collected books at weekly sales to benefit non-profit groups. The remainder are recycled and used to make products such as cellulose insulation, paper egg cartons, envelopes, newsprint, asphalt shingles, paper roofing and paper for new books. Got Books has pledged to send at least 25,000 books in 2008 to local soldiers stationed overseas, and so far has donated more than 1,000 books to New Orleans schools that were affected by Hurricane Katrina. "This is an important development because omething that used to be thrown away in significant amounts into the landfill now has good use," said Ms. Valiela. Hours at the transfer station are Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m yearound. The station does not accept encyclopedias or damaged items.Read More...
